His irregular schooling, ending at 15, was followed by a four-year apprenticeship (1826–30) on a country weekly at East Poultney, Vt.

The city is the site of the Univ. of Northern Colorado and has a symphony orchestra, a theater, and an art gallery. Greeley also holds an annual rodeo.
