(hī'pō-fos-fă-tē'mē-ă) Deficiency of phosphorus in blood; may be due to chronic diarrhea, deficiency of vitamin D, hyperparathyroidism with hypercalcemia, hypomagnesemia, malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, or malabsorption syndrome. Signs include anorexia, muscle wasting, paresthesia, and tremors.
