Hauptman, Herbert (Aaron)

(1917– ) biophysicist; born in New York City. At the Naval Research Laboratory (1965–70), he and Jerome Karle developed a mathematical method for determining three-dimensional crystal structures of hormone, vitamin, and antibiotic molecules, using X-ray crystallography. They shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry (1985) for this work. After 1970 he worked at the Medical Foundation of Buffalo, Inc.
