Born Sept. 12, 1934, in Kiev; died Aug. 22, 1966, in Zagorianskaia, Moscow Oblast. Soviet comparative linguist.

Illich-Svitych substantiated the Nostratic theory of the relationship between the Indo-European, Kartvelian, Semito-Hamitic, Dravidian, Uralic, and Altaic languages by working out their comparative phonetics and compiling a comparative dictionary of common roots (Comparison of the Nostratic Languages, vol. 1, 1971). He was the author of the basic work Nominal Accentuation in Baltic and Slavic (1963), as well as etymological and comparative phonetic studies on the Slavic, Baltic, Indo-European, Uralic, Altaic, Kartvelian, and Chad languages. He compiled the first Macedonian-Russian dictionary (in collaboration with D. Tolovski).
