Faeroe-Iceland Ridge

Faeroe-Iceland Ridge

an underwater uplift in the northern Atlantic Ocean, connecting the underwater foundations of Iceland and the Faeroe Islands. The ridge is more than 500 km long and is up to 300 km wide at the 1,000-m contour line. It is composed of basalts, overlain by a discontinuous layer of terrigenous and volcanogenic sediments with relative heights of up to 3,000 m. The crest of the ridge resembles a plateau and is located 400–500 m below the surface of the water. The Faeroe-Iceland Ridge separates the Norwegian Sea from the West European Basin of the Atlantic Ocean.
