indirect transfusion

in·di·rect trans·fu·sion

transfusion into a patient of blood previously obtained from a donor and stored under suitable conditions. Synonym(s): mediate transfusion

indirect transfusion

An obsolete term that dignifies the practice of transfusing blood that has been collected from a donor, “typed” (ABO- and Rh-typed), screened for the presence of antibodies or infectious agents, and “processed” as deemed appropriate prior to transfusion. This is in contrast to direct transfusion, the obsolete practice of connecting via cannulae, the vascular system of donor and recipient.

in·di·rect trans·fu·sion
