GP commissioning

GP commissioning

A new approach to the design and delivery of healthcare in the UK, which is based on understanding the needs of a local population, of groups and of individual patients, designing services that best meet those needs, developing a clinical framework for creating a range of contracts with providers to offer choice for patients wherever possible and ensuring that services are delivered to the highest standards of quality. Because GPs are the patients’ first point of contact with non-urgent health services, GP commissioning brings decision-making much closer to patients and local communities, and ensures commissioner accountability.
