Venturi in Automotive Engineering
(vɛntʊəri)
Word forms: (regular plural) Venturis
noun
(Automotive engineering: Vehicle components, Engine, transmission, and exhaust)
In a vehicle, a Venturi is a nozzle which accelerates and lowers static pressure in gases or vapors flowing through it.
Named after Italian physicist Giovanni Venturi
If the Venturi is too large, the flow of air is slow and will not atomize sufficient fuel to makea balanced mixture.
In the days before fuel-injection, the "Venturi" was a feature of carburetors. Without it fuel couldn’t be drawn from the tank tomix with the flow of air.
The science teacher set up the convergent-divergent nozzle, with flexible pipes attachedto manometers, to demonstrate to his class the action of the Venturi.
