casta painting n. a genre of painting produced chiefly in Mexico during the 18th cent., depicting families representing different combinations of inter-ethnic mixing, esp. between the indigenous, Spanish, and African populations; a painting of this sort.These works typically consist of a series of sixteen portraits of family groups (usually mother, father, and one or two children) accompanied by an inscription giving the casta to which each person is said to belong.
