Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Canary , bird n.
Etymology: < the name of the Canary Islands (see Canary n.1) + bird n. Compare Middle French, French canari (1583; also †canarie ) and its etymon Spanish canario (a1520), both denoting the bird. Compare later canary n.5In the specific use in sense 2a a prisoner in jail is likened to a caged bird (compare jail-bird n.). With use in sense 2b compare earlier canary n.5 2a and discussion at that entry. In sense 3 so called on account of its colour. In sense 4 so called on account of the colour of its flowers.
1. An Old World finch native to the Canary Islands, the Azores, and Madeira, widely popular as a cage and aviary bird for its melodious song, Serinus canaria (family Fringillidae). Cf. canary n.5 1.Also called canary finch.
