Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin affīdation-, affīdatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin affīdation-, affīdatio solemn promise, declaration on oath, betrothal (from 12th cent. in British sources; also in continental sources) < affīdat- , past participial stem of affīdare (see affy v.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1.

Sworn confirmation of a fact, promise, or obligation; esp. sworn confirmation of one's intent to marry. Also: an instance of this.
