e. canonical purgation [compare post-classical Latin purgatio canonica (1262, c1330 in British sources)] (i.e. as prescribed by the canon law) an affirmation of innocence given on oath by the accused in a spiritual court, and confirmed by the oaths of several of his or her peers.
