Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adūlātor.
Etymology: < classical Latin adūlātor servile flatterer, sycophant < adūlāt- , past participial stem of adūlārī adulate v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French, French adulateur (1370). Compare earlier adulation n. and later adulate v.
A person who offers adulation; (originally) one who flatters obsequiously or sycophantically; (now usually) one who admires and praises uncritically or excessively.
