Etymology: < cannon n.1 + -ry suffix, after e.g. gunnery n.Compare Middle French canonnerie discharge of cannon (1549), art of using cannons (end of the 16th cent.; French canonnerie, now only in sense ‘place where cannons are manufactured’ (first half of the 19th cent.)), Spanish cañonería discharge of cannon (early 17th cent.), cannon collectively (first half of the 18th cent.).
Now chiefly historical.
