Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Dutch cannekijn, Portuguese canequim, canequí.
Etymology: < (i) early modern Dutch cannekijn (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598), and its etymon (ii) Portuguese canequim, canequí (1546) < Marathi khaṇkī, khaṇḍkī, probably < a Dravidian language (compare Malayalam kāṅki, denoting a kind of cloth).With the β. forms compare also Spanish caniquí (1609; < Portuguese).
Obsolete.
A type of (usually white) cotton cloth from the East Indies. Chiefly in plural.
