Etymology: < cannel n.2 + -ate suffix2, after either Italian cannellato (1598 in Florio) or French cannelé (14th cent. as quenelé ). Compare earlier channelled adj.Compare post-classical Latin canellatus, cannellatus (of sulphur) piped (from 13th cent. in British sources).
Originally Architecture (rare). In later use Botany.
Fluted, grooved, channelled.
