单词 adrench
释义

adrenchv.

Forms: see a- prefix1 and drench v.; also Old English adreint- (past participle, inflected form, rare), Old English adrincte (past tense).
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Low German erdrenken to flood, drown (compare Old Saxon ordrenkian to intoxicate), Old High German irtrenken to inebriate, to drown (Middle High German ertrenken , German ertränken ) < the Germanic base of or- prefix (compare a- prefix1) + the Germanic base of drench v. Compare adrink v.In sense 4 perhaps partly also representing a reduced form (see a- prefix3) of Old English ondrencan to inebriate, to provide with liquid ( < on- prefix + drench v.). The rare Old English past participle form adreint- is an unusually early attestation of a spelling common in Middle English (see R. Jordan Handb. der mittelenglischen Grammatik (ed. 2, 1934) §103, and compare e.g. late Old English cwæint , past participle of quench v.). The past tense form adrincte perhaps shows the influence of adrink v.
