Etymology: Originally < classical Latin carbōn-, carbō (see carbon n.) + -ous suffix. In later use directly < carbon n. + -ous suffix. In sense 2 probably after French carboneux (1789 in the passage translated in quot. 1789 at sense 2). With sense 1 compare later carbonose adj.
