Etymology: < classical Latin callaina pale green precious stone (Pliny; use as noun of feminine of callainus greenish-blue, turquoise-coloured < Hellenistic Greek καλλάϊνος (also καλάϊνος ), of uncertain origin) + -ite suffix¹. Compare earlier callais n.

Mineralogy. Now rare or disused.

A green mineral discovered at an archaeological site in Brittany, France, identified with Pliny's callais (turquoise) but later shown to be a mixture of turquoise and wavellite.
