Origin: A borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: French agame , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < French agame (1809 in a botanical context; < post-classical Latin agamus unmarried (4th cent. in Jerome) or its etymon ancient Greek ἄγαμος < ἀ- a- prefix6 + γάμος marriage: see -gam comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare agamic adj.
Biology. Now chiefly Botany.
Lacking sexual organs; asexual. Formerly also: †(of a plant) belonging to the former taxonomic division Cryptogamia, comprising plants believed to lack sexual organs; obsolete. Cf. agamic adj.
