Etymology: < A n. + line n.2, so-called on account of the outline of the dress resembling the capital letter A (see note at definition).

On a garment, esp. a dress or skirt: a style or cut in which the material flares in a straight line from the shoulder or waist to the hem. Also: a garment having such a cut.This style was introduced by Christian Dior in his 1955 spring collection which took its inspiration from the shape of a capital letter A (see quot. 19551).
