单词 a-go-go
释义

a-go-goadj.

Brit. /əˈɡəʊɡəʊ/, U.S. /əˈɡoʊˌɡoʊ/
Forms: 1900s– a gogo, 1900s– à gogo, 1900s– a-gogo, 1900s– a go go, 1900s– a go-go, 1900s– a-go-go, 1900s– agogo.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French à gogo.
Etymology: < French à gogo galore, aplenty (a1465 in Middle French as adverb in sense ‘joyfully, uninhibitedly, extravagantly’) < à , preposition (see a- prefix5) + gogo , probably a reduplicated form of the imitative base of Old French, Middle French gogue amusement, fun, entertainment (see agog adv.). In later use apparently sometimes apprehended as a combining form < -a-, connective + go-go adj.2A nightclub and discotheque called Whisky à Gogo , lit. ‘Whisky Galore’, (apparently named after the film of that name) opened in Paris in 1952, and quickly became a favourite with the young and fashionable set. (The concept of the modern discotheque, with disc jockeys and turntables, as opposed to jukeboxes, is generally supposed to have originated here.) Within the next few years many clubs and discotheques bearing the same name and playing the latest music on disc had sprung up in France and elsewhere in Europe. The first club of this name in the United States (Whisky a Go Go ) opened in Chicago in 1958, although the most famous was on Sunset Strip, Los Angeles (opened 1964; compare quot. 19641 at sense 1b), a leading venue for popular music in the 1960s and popularizer of go-go dancing.
