Origin: A borrowing from French; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: French cancrite.
Etymology: Originally < French cancrite (1763; < either classical Latin cancr- , cancer cancer n. or French cancre (see canker n.) + -ite -ite suffix1); subsequently (in form cancerite) remodelled after classical Latin (or scientific Latin) cancer.
Palaeontology. Obsolete. rare.
A fossil crab.
