单词 yokohama
释义

Yokohaman.

Brit. /ˌjəʊkəˈhɑːmə/, U.S. /ˌjoʊkəˈhɑmə/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Yokohama.
Etymology: < Yokohama, the name of a city in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan (now part of the Tokyo conurbation). The treaty port (and hence the city) of Yokohama was founded in 1859 in the location of an earlier fishing village of the same name. The place name is first mentioned in English slightly before this (1854, at the time of the U.S. fleet's landing there, or earlier). In the West, Yokohama fowl (see sense 1) were first bred in Germany from Japanese specimens imported in the late 1860s. With this sense compare German Yokohama-huhn, lit. ‘Yokohama hen’ (1872 or earlier), also Yokohama (1874 or earlier).
1. A long-tailed breed of domestic fowl with plumage of various colours and patterns, esp. red-saddled; a bird of this breed. Also Yokohama fowl.
