γ. Scottish pre-1700 ȝocundaler, pre-1700 ȝopingdolour.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly a borrowing from Dutch. Apparently partly a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymons: Dutch jochimdaler; Middle Low German jochimdaler.
Etymology: Apparently < early modern Dutch jochimdaler (1544 as jochendaelder ) and its equivalent Middle Low German jochimdaler (1541; also joachimdaler ), (although these are first attested slightly later), both < German Joachimtaler (variant, without -s -connective, of Joachimstaler Joachimsthaler n.), with remodelling of the second element after Dutch dal and Middle Low German dal valley (see dale n.1 and compare discussion of the underlying place name at Joachimsthaler n.). Compare dollar n. and thaler n.Compare (probably < Dutch) Old Frisian jochendāler , also (probably < Middle Low German) early modern Icelandic jóakimsdalur (1542 jochymsdall , accusative), early modern Swedish joakimsdaler (1534 as jachemsdaler ), early modern Danish iochimsdaler (1536), iochimdaller (1540), and further ( < Middle Low German or Dutch) Middle French jocondale , jocondalle (1569 or earlier). In β. forms perhaps influenced by gowpen n. Compare early modern Icelandic jopendalur (1542, rare). The relatively late form ȝoupkindaill at β. forms (1587) apparently shows a merger of the two types; it is attested only once, in the same sentence as an instance of ȝoppindaill The γ. forms reflect the full form of the second element of the etymon; with the form ȝopingdolour compare dollar n. and the variants listed at that entry.
Obsolete.
Esp. in Scotland: a Joachimsthaler; an amount of money equivalent to the value of this. Cf. Joachimsthaler n.The quotation evidence shows that the Joachimsthaler varied in value from 15 to 36 shillings Scots during the 16th cent., a period of economic difficulty and high inflation in Scotland.
