Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch jukschei.
Etymology: Apparently < South African Dutch jukschei jukskei n., with remodelling of the first element after yoke n. Compare later skey n.2 Compare also slightly later jukskei n.The early plural form yoke-schegen probably reflects a South African Dutch plural form, although this has not been traced (compare South African Dutch jukscheien, Afrikaans jukskeien).

Either of a pair of wooden bars passing through an ox-yoke at either side of an animal's neck, to which the neck straps are fixed; = skey n.2 Compare also jukskei n.

1850 R. Gordon-Cumming Five Years Hunter's Life S. Afr. I. ii. 24 Passing through each end of the yoke, at distances of 18 inches from one another, are two parallel bars of tough wood about 18 inches in length; these are called yoke-skeys. In inspanning, the yoke is placed on the back of the neck of the ox, with one of these skeys on either side.

2012 Sowetan (Johannesburg) (Nexis) 14 Mar. The Trekkers from the interior would, at overnight camping sites, draw the yoke-skey (jukskei) from the foremost yoke, plant it upright in the soft soil and try to score a point by hitting this target with one of the smaller skeys.
