Willdenow Linnæus' Species Plantarum (ed. 4) VI. ii. 120), < sporid- (in sporidium n.) (or spori- , combining form of Greek σπορά spore n.) + Greek δεσμός band, bundle: see -in suffix¹.

Any of a class of toxins that are produced by fungi and cause various diseases of animals, esp. sheep, when ingested.
