Etymology: < modern Latin Sporidesmium, generic name of the fungus from which the first such substance was isolated (H. F. Link 1825, in D. C. L. Willdenow Linnæus' Species Plantarum (ed. 4) VI. ii. 120), < sporid- (in sporidium n.) (or spori- , combining form of Greek σπορά spore n.) + Greek δεσμός band, bundle: see -in suffix¹.

Any of a class of toxins that are produced by fungi and cause various diseases of animals, esp. sheep, when ingested.
