Etymology: < German Zinnober (see cinnabar n.) + green n.¹, after German Zinnobergrün (1840 or earlier).The name apparently referred to its quality as comparable to the red colour of cinnabar (compare German Zinnoberrot (1691 or earlier), occasionally rendered in English as zinnober red (1898 as a colour term, 1911 as a pigment name)). In the forms zinnabar green, zinnobar green showing alteration after cinnabar n. N.E.D. (1921) gives the pronunciation of zinnober as (zi·nobəɹ) /ˈzɪnəʊbə(r)/.
