释义

yesternadv.n.adj.

Brit. /ˈjɛstən/, U.S. /ˈjɛstərn/
Forms: 1700s–1900s yestern, 1800s yesthern (English regional (Yorkshire)), 1800s yesun (English regional (Surrey)), 1800s yessun (English regional (Surrey)).
Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: yestreen adv.; yester adv., yester n., yester adj.
Etymology: Apparently partly (i) (in English editions of Scots texts) a variant or alteration of yestreen adv., after yester adv., and partly (ii) a variant or alteration of yester adv., yester n., and yester adj., respectively. In use as adverb perhaps partly influenced by Dutch gisteren (adverb) yesterday (see yesterday adv.). With the noun phrase yestern's eve (in quot. 1807 at sense B.) compare yestern eve adv., yester-eve adv., and slightly later yestreen n. In use as adjective perhaps influenced by other adjectives ending in -ern , such as derivatives with -en suffix4 from nouns ending in -er (e.g. papern adj.) or older formations like eastern adj. (compare -ern suffix).
