单词 yester-
释义

yester-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. yesternoon Brit. /ˌjɛstəˈnuːn/, U.S. /ˌjɛstərˈnun/.
Forms: late Middle English ȝister-, 1500s– yester-.
Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: yesterday adv., yesternight adv.
Etymology: < yester- (in yesterday adv., yesternight adv., etc.). Compare yester n., yester adj., and yester adv.Combinations with yester- comb. form could alternatively be interpreted as collocations with yester adj.; the combining form is here interpreted as forming a restricted set of compounds denoting periods of time, on the model of yesterday adv., etc. Formations are found occasionally from the 15th cent. or earlier (compare yestermorrow : see quot. a1500 ), and subsequently from the 16th cent. (compare yestermorning adv., yester-evening adv., etc.). In some cases, parallel formations with yesterday as the first element are attested earlier than the corresponding formation with yester- (compare yesterday noon and yesterday afternoon at yesterday adv., n., and adj. Compounds 1). Compare also the combinations discussed at last adj. 7a(a).
Forming nouns and adverbs denoting the period of time immediately preceding the current one, as yesterafternoon, yesternoon, yesterweek, etc. See also yester-eve adv., yestermorn adv. and n., etc. yestermorrow: on or during the morning of yesterday; yesterday morning.
