Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish Yezīdī; Persian Yazīdī.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish Yezīdī (Turkish Yezidi ) and its etymon Persian Yazīdī, probably < the name of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiya (see note) + Persian , suffix expressing belonging and forming ethnonyms (see -i suffix2).The Yazidi self-designation in Kurdish is Êzdî (also Êzîdî ). Yazīd b. Muʿāwiya (644–83) was the second caliph of the Umayyad dynasty and is venerated by Yazidis as Sultan Ezi (Kurdish Siltan Êzî ), a founding figure of the religion. The traditional derivations (compare quot. 1852) either < Avestan yazata , denoting a concept of the divine in Zoroastrianism, used as epithet of divinities (lit. ‘worthy of worship’) and (in the Younger Avesta) as an epithet of Zoroastrian divinities such as Mithra or Sraosha (who occupy a lesser status compared to the Ahura Mazda; compare Mazdaism n.), or < the related Middle Persian yazd god, divinity (ultimately < the verbal base yaz- to worship, cognate with Sanskrit yaj- : see yajna n.) are no longer widely accepted.
A. n.
A member of a Kurdish-speaking religious group which chiefly inhabits Iraq, Syria, Armenia, and Georgia, and believes that the world was created by a supreme God who rules with the assistance of seven angels. The most important of the angels is Malak Tawus, whom outsiders often associate with the Devil; see quot. 1871.
