Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Ζηνο-.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek Ζηνο-, combining form (in e.g. Ζηνόϕρων knowing the mind of Zeus) of ancient Greek Ζεύς (see Zeus n.1); compare -o- connective.Compare French (rare) zéno- (a small number of formations in which are found from the late 19th cent.). Found in a small number of scientific formations from the 19th cent., earliest in zenographic adj. and zenographical adj. (compare zenography n.). (Zenocratically adv. shows an isolated formation from the same Greek element in the 16th cent., not connected to the later use.) Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
