单词 wory
释义

woryadj.

Forms: Middle English wori, Middle English worie.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: wore v.1, -y suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < wore v.1 + -y suffix1.Perhaps attested earlier in forms of the name of the river Were in Wiltshire: compare the place name Worgemynster , Wiltshire (early 10th cent.; now Warminster), lit. ‘minster church on the (river) Were’, with the meaning of the river name either ‘wandering, meandering’ or ‘turbid, dirty’; however, Celtic origin has also been suggested. An alternative (and less likely) etymology derives the word as the reflex of the obscure Old English wārig , attested only once, apparently in the sense ‘(of clothes) dirty’ (apparently < ware n.1 + -y suffix1, although the semantic development is unclear):OE Maxims I 98 Heo..wæsceð his [sc. the sailor's] warig hrægl ond him syleþ wæde niwe.
