Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: English yes, ma'am.
Etymology: Representing an African-American pronunciation of yes, ma'am (see yessum adv. and compare yas adv.). Compare earlier yessum adv. and yassuh adv.
U.S. colloquial.
Used to express assent or agreement when replying to a woman: ‘yes, ma'am’. Cf. yassuh adv.Chiefly in representations of African-American speech. Now sometimes used to highlight offensive expectations or stereotypes of black servility (see, e.g. quot. 2006).
