Etymology: < world n. + power n.1, probably after German Weltmacht secular power, political power (1691), a nation, state, etc. with great power in world affairs (1829 or earlier).
1. In form world-power. Power exercised upon or throughout the world, esp. by one nation, system of thought, etc.; (also) the power of the world of humankind (as distinguished from the spiritual world); secular power. Also in extended use.
