单词 relese
释义

relesen.

Forms:

α. Middle English relece, Middle English relees, Middle English reles, Middle English relese, Middle English relese.

β. 1500s–1600s release.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French reles.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman or Middle French reles, relais, and hence etymologically identical to release n.; the English senses probably developed from the French word in the meaning ‘remainder, residue’ (12th cent. in Old French; frequently in sans nul relais completely), although related senses are very poorly attested in French; an isolated example of relais in the meaning ‘effect’ is perhaps shown by Gower's Mirour de l'Omme (c1376–9) 3020–3 (compare his use of the English word in quot. a1393); compare French regional (Channel Islands) r'lais taste, tastiness (Jersey), bland or insipid taste (Guernsey). Compare later relish n.2, and also relish n.1, relish n.3 Middle Eng. Dict. suggests a possible sense ‘beauty’ for quot. c1330 at α. ; but see the discussion of this in Notes & Queries (1999) 438.
Obsolete.
(a) Impression, effect, influence. (b) Taste, aftertaste, relish. (c) Odour, scent.
