Etymology: < woman n. + kind n. In quot. c1175 apparently reflecting a genitive plural compound with unmarked first element (the reflex of the Old English genitive plural wīfmanna ); compare woman n. Compounds 5 and see note below. Compare womankin n., and later womenkind n. Compare also mankind n.No genitive plural compound is attested for Old English; however, compare the following phrase with genitive singular:OE Ælfric Homily (Vitell. C.v) in J. C.
