Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: woman n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < woman n. + -ist suffix, as noun in sense A. 2 and as adjective perhaps after womanism n.In the specific uses of the noun and adjective with reference to black feminism (compare womanism n. 2b) popularized by the work of U.S. writer Alice Walker (b. 1944), and used as a conscious alternative to feminist n. and feminist adj. respectively, partly owing to the more immediate association with woman n. and related words (as e.g. womanish adj. 3b):1983 A.
