Etymology: Middle English wodewale , < or cognate with Middle Low German wedewale (early Flemish widewael ‘oriolus’) < wede wood n.1 + *wale of obscure origin. (Compare witwall n. 2, hickwall n.)
Now dialect.
1. A singing bird: in early quots. of uncertain identity, but probably (as later) the Golden Oriole, Oriolus galbula, which has a loud flute-like whistle: = witwall n. 1. Obsolete.
