Etymology: < primitive adj. + -ism suffix. With sense 1 compare French primitivisme (in the arts) fact of imitating primitive (i.e. pre-Renaissance) painters (1904; compare quot. 1950 at sense 1), simple and natural lifestyle (1906), (in ethnology) character or state of primitive societies (1939). With sense 2 compare earlier Primitive Methodism n. at primitive n. and adj. Compounds 2.
