Each of four isomeric alcohols having the general formula C4H9(OH), used as solvents and as reagents in chemical synthesis, esp. butan-1-ol. Also called butyl alcohol.The four isomers are 1-butanol or butan-1-ol (also called n-butanol) (CH2(OH)CH2CH2CH3), 2-butanol or butan-2-ol (CH3CH(OH)CH2CH3), iso-butanol (2-methylpropan-1-ol) (CH3C(CH3)HCH2OH, and tert-butanol (2-methylpropan-2-ol) (C(CH3)3OH).
