Each of four isomeric alcohols having the general formula C₄H₉(OH), used as solvents and as reagents in chemical synthesis, esp. butan-1-ol. Also called butyl alcohol.The four isomers are 1-butanol or butan-1-ol (also called n-butanol) (CH₂(OH)CH₂CH₂CH₃), 2-butanol or butan-2-ol (CH₃CH(OH)CH₂CH₃), iso-butanol (2-methylpropan-1-ol) (CH₃C(CH₃)HCH₂OH, and tert-butanol (2-methylpropan-2-ol) (C(CH₃)₃OH).
