Etymology: < white adj. + terror n. In sense 2 partly after Red Terror n. at red adj. and n. Compounds 1f(c)(i).With sense 1 compare French terreur blanche (1805, in the parallel French text in the source cited in quot. 1805, or earlier). With sense 2 compare Russian belyj terror (1880 or earlier in this sense; 1917 with reference to the Civil War), Hungarian Fehérterror (after Vörösterror red terror, denoting immediately preceding events), Chinese Báisè Kǒngbù (1920 or earlier, initially with reference to Hungary; < báisè white of colour + kǒngbù terror).
1. French History. The period of violent repression led by counter-revolutionary forces in 1795, in reaction to the First French Revolution; the violence and bloodshed of this period (cf. Red Terror n. at red adj. and n. Compounds 1f(c)(i)). Also: the (period of) repression following the restoration of Louis XVIII in 1815.
