Etymology: < self- prefix + selection n. Compare earlier self-selected adj. and slightly later self-select v.
1. The action or practice of putting oneself forward for something, as opposed to being selected; the fact of having put oneself (unknowingly) into a particular statistical group through one's lifestyle choices. Now frequently in the social sciences: the action or practice of selecting oneself into a group to be sampled, esp. by responding to an invitation to take part in a survey, research project, etc.
