2. slang (originally and chiefly U.S.). Used as an exclamation or greeting, chiefly in contexts in which a man is being recognized, indicated, or portrayed as homosexual or effeminate. Originally and chiefly in Whoops, my dear and variants, with the same sense. Now chiefly historical.In quot. 1941 as a n.: a homosexual man.
The term apparently originated from the title and lyrics of the popular song cited in quot. 1910, which describes a flamboyant young man.
