Etymology: < white adj. + ant n.1 In sense 1 originally after Portuguese formiga branca termite (1611 in the source translated in quot. 1625, or earlier); compare Middle French, French fourmi blanche (1556 or earlier).
1. Any of the numerous eusocial insects constituting the order (or infraorder) Isoptera, some of which are destructive pests feeding on wood or crops; = termite n. 1.Termites are more closely related to cockroaches than to true ants, but resemble ants in living in large colonies comprising individuals of several different castes, with wingless and winged forms.
