单词 widely
释义

widelyadv.

Brit. /ˈwʌɪdli/, U.S. /ˈwaɪdli/
Forms: see wide adj. and -ly suffix2.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: wide adj., -ly suffix2.
Etymology: < wide adj. + -ly suffix2. Compare earlier wide adv. and Middle English uses of widen adv. N.E.D. (1924) records a sense defined as ‘With ‘latitude’ of conduct, beyond the bounds of propriety, uncivilly’, but this is based on an erroneous reading (perhaps influenced by wide adj. 13a) of rudely adv. in earlier editions of the text cited in the following quot.:1666 S. Pepys Diary 6 Aug. (1972) VII. 237 My Lord..did treat her..very rudely and ungenteely.
1. In most widely: (probably) in a way that gives the greatest amount of space or degree of freedom; (perhaps contextually) completely, fully. Obsolete. rare. The exact meaning in quot. a1382 is unclear; C. Lindberg (in his edition of 1965) also tentatively suggests the sense ‘generously’.
