Etymology: Origin unknown. With the β. forms compare urled adj. and urle v.2 N.E.D. (1926) gives the pronunciation as (wə̄·ɹliŋ) /ˈwɜːlɪŋ/.
Obsolete (chiefly Scottish or English regional (northern) in later use).
A puny or stunted person or creature; a despicable or contemptible person, a wretch. Also as a term of abuse. Cf. urling n.2
