Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: wife n., -let suffix.
Etymology: < wife n. + -let suffix. Compare earlier wifekin n. at wife n. Derivatives.In sense 2 apparently coined by Alexander Thynn, seventh Marquess of Bath (1932–2020) (compare quots. 1983, 2008):2015 Marquess of Bath Let. 23 Dec. (O.E.D. Archive) I believe that the first occasion that I employed the term ‘wifelet’ was in response to queries from either the Daily Mail or the Daily Express, when they were pressing me to define the nature of my relationship with Tania Duckworth [in 1966]. I was resisting their suggestion that I should describe her as my fiancée, or my future wife by insisting that she was my ‘wifelet’.
