Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: wienerwurst n.
Etymology: Shortened < wienerwurst n. Compare German Wiener (short for Wiener Wurst wienerwurst n.), and (with regional diminutive suffix) Wienerle, both denoting the sausage (20th cent. or earlier).
1. Originally and chiefly North American. A small, thin sausage similar to a frankfurter, traditionally made of pork and beef, and typically smoked. Also more fully wiener sausage, wienerwurst n. Cf. Vienna sausage n. at Vienna n. 5b.
