Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from early Scandinavian, combined with an English derivational element. Etymon: -ock suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < a first element of early Scandinavian origin (compare Old Icelandic bumba drum, belly of a jar or tub, Norwegian bomme basket for food, wooden box, and perhaps further Middle Dutch bommekijn small barrel: see bumpkin n.2) + -ock suffix.With the proposed first element compare bummie, used in Orkney from the late 19th cent. to denote a wooden vessel for liquids or porridge (see further Sc. National Dict. at Bummie n.2).
Scottish (chiefly Orkney). Obsolete.
Strong ale brewed in large quantities for a feast. Also (Orkney): a feast given by tenants for their landlords each Christmas, at which this ale is drunk. Also in plural.

A downward projection or ridge on the underside of sea ice. Cf. hummock n. 1e.
